Safety of Tea Tree Oil
Question:
Dear Dr. Smith,
I have read several times that Tea Tree Oil is toxic to cats but your ear care contains the oil. Is this a fable or truth?
Please let me know if it can be used externally on cats for small area of scratching.

Dear Pattie,
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. Tea Tree Oil has been found in several cases to be toxic in cats if ingested but not as a topical. This has been primarily in kittens and debilitated cats. Many cats have been treated successfully and safely with tea tree products.
If you have a concern for an itchy area I recommend Ultimate Skin and Coat, Septiderm-V or Dermaclear. Please be sure that there no flea issues, as that will decrease or prevent the chances of successful treatment for the itchiness. Best of luck.
