Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Question:
I have a Yorkie under 2 years old that was diagnosed with Diabetic Ketoacidosis. She is on 2 units of insulin per day and eating Hills WD. Can you recommend anything holistic that will help? Thank you.
Barb B. - NW Indiana
Answer:
Hello Barb,
Thank you for your inquiry to Holistic Pet Info. I would first suggest changing your dog’s food. I’m guessing she is a bit overweight which is suggestive of WD, but I find Hills foods contain certain toxic preservatives. The ingredients BHT, BHA, and ethoxyquin are preservatives I feel are in too high of a concentration in dog food to be acceptable. There are more holistic diets such as Innova, Solid Gold, California Naturals and several others that I recommend you try for your dog. These are premium foods found in specialty stores. Diabetic animals need a high protein, moderate fat and low carbohydrate diet, and these diet contain a higher protein than WD.
Also, I suggest trying GlucoBalance by Pet Alive to improve insulin response and help maintain better glucose levels. Always remember to be sure to feed and give insulin at the same time. Best of luck.
Sincerely,
Colleen Smith DVM, CVA
