Ringworm in Dogs and Cats
Ringworm is a highly contagious fungal infection of the skin that can infect dogs and cats. It usually affects the scalp, body and nails. Pets with weakened immune systems or pre-existing skin disorders are more susceptible to ringworm.
Ringworm is transmitted directly from one animal to the other animal and may be spread by sharing food, water bowls, sleeping mats, and grooming tools.
Signs of Ringworms in Dogs and Cats
As the name implies, one of the telltale signs of ringworm is a circular area of hair loss (or small patches of hair loss). Skin may be inflamed and scaly as well.
Veterinarians may diagnose ringworm based on a physical examination of the skin or through a fungal culture or blood tests.
Treatment for Ringworm
Ringworm infections may be treated with oral and topical medications prescribed by your veterinarian. A holistic approach to treating ringworms involves:
- Providing fresh, clean water for your pet at all times
- Disinfecting and cleaning food bowls, bedding and grooming tools.
- Feeding your pet a high quality diet free of preservatives and additives.
- Supporting your pet's immune system to help fight infections.
- Bathing your pet after exposure to large groups of animals (kennels, catteries and pet shows).
Natural ingredients such as Tea Tree Oil, Witchhazel, Neem and Marigold help to promote healthy skin and regenerate skin cells.
